Fund to award scholarships to Chicano/a students at banquet

By Rita Totten, Staff Writer

The Chicano Scholarship Fund board of trustees is handing out 15 scholarships tonight at the 33rd annual Scholarship Banquet.

The full-ride and one-year tuition scholarships will be given to students who have been involved in the community, exhibited leadership and excelled academically.

The Chicano Scholarship Fund was founded in 1973 by Chicano members of the community who wanted to reward outstanding achievement by Chicano/a students.

Manuel Romero, chairman of the U Chicano Fund board of trustees, said that all recipients of the scholarships will be guided by staff and faculty members to succeed in their education.

“It’s more than just receiving the scholarship,” Romero said. “Students are mentored to ensure their success.”

The banquet will be held in the Union Ballroom at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and silent auction. The awards banquet is at 7:00 p.m.
