ASUU to host UVote concert on eve of election

By Rita Totten, Staff Writer

On the eve of a highly publicized presidential election, the ASUU Presenter’s Office will host a concert intended to motivate all registered voters to cast their ballots the following day.

The UVote concert is a free concert and will feature Phantom Planet, The Maine and The Brobecks.

“Since the results of the election greatly impact us all, the Presenter’s Office felt this would be a great way to reach students through entertainment to encourage them to remember to vote for this vital election,” said Amanda Mecham, director of the Associated Students of the University of Utah Presenter’s Office.

Mecham said the main agenda of the concert is to encourage students who took the time to register to actually exercise their right to vote.

The UVote concert will also include activities such as T-shirt decorating, button making, photo opportunities with cardboard cut-outs of the presidential candidates and an artistic display of issues students find most important to them during the election.

“I feel that this year has been such an incredibly energizing year for elections and politics,” said Tian Luu, concert chair for the Presenter’s Office. “What better way to keep the stone rolling than with a rock concert?”

Luu said the concert will be a last-minute chance for students to learn more about the presidential candidates before hitting the polls the next day.

Sarah Garner, a sophomore in political science, said she is excited for the UVote concert because it will allow her to get together with people who have similar interests and see where her peers stand on issues.

“I think it’s important for U students to get engaged in election activities,” she said.

U students can pick up their free tickets in the Union and purchase $5 tickets for friends. The concert will start at 6 p.m. in the Union Free Speech Area.
