Pre-election fim festival to end Thursday with ‘Body’

By Rita Totten, Staff Writer

The Union Programming Council’s five-day film series, Films to See Before U Vote, concludes Thursday.

The films explore important political and social issues through the medium of film, said Alex Bowles, film chair for the UPC arts and special events board.

Bowles, an intern for the Salt Lake City Film Center, said he liked the work the center did for the community and felt that U students would benefit from the programming.

The five films cover various political and social issues including torture, water crisis and the United States’ economic status.

“Taxi to the Dark Side,” “Running Dry: The Global Water Crisis,” “Uncounted,” “I.O.U.S.A” and “Body of War” are the featured films.

Ben Sondelski, a freshman in electric engineering, said he came to the film series to educate himself about the voting process.

Sondelski attended the documentary “Uncounted,” which examines the controversy around the 2004 presidential election and the apparent miscalculated votes.

“It was disturbing and embarrassing,” Sondelski said of the alleged fraud and corruption presented in the film. “I am ashamed I haven’t learned about it before.”

Attendance has varied from film to film.

“The first film had about 30 people,” Bowles said. “I would like to have 101 in attendance because that’s how much the Union Theater holds.”

The series began Oct. 20 and will end Thursday with “Body of War” at 7 p.m. in the Union Theater.
