Utes struggle to stay the course

By Marco Villano, Staff Writer

It was another shaky weekend for the Utah golf team, which tied for 14th place at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M.

Not all was bad, however, as lone senior golfer Chance Cota tied for 12th place in the tournament.

Although the team took itself out of the tournament in the first round by shooting 304, Cota jumped out of the gate with a score of 143 after the first two rounds. He went on to end the tournament at one under par at 71.

Sophomore Derek Adams had a career-best tournament by shooting 217 and tying for 23rd place. Sophomore Jeff Kitches and freshman Kaleb Mahanes both finished at 15 over par, leaving them tied for 68th place. Sophomore Mike Branca rounded out the young crew with a score of 17 over par.

New Mexico State University won the tournament with a score of 861, with Kansas State finishing in second. NMSU’s Travis Reid won the tournament at five-under par.

The Utes will finish their Fall Schedule in the University of Hawaii Kauai Invitational starting Nov. 3. After the snow melts, the Utes will finish their season with four tournaments in the spring. They only tournament played in Utah will April’s BYU-hosted Cougar Classic, played at the Riverside Country Club in Provo.
