Women freshman swimmers place No. 1 in seven events

By Paige Fieldsted, Staff Writer

The trend continued for both the men’s and women’s swim teams as the women earned another win and the men still have yet to win this season.

The women’s swim team won again this season as it defeated conference rivals UNLV 179-121 Saturday.

The freshman swimmers contributed in a big way for the women as a freshman placed No. 1 in seven different events throughout the meet.

“It was a lot of our freshman, besides just Hannah Caron and Whitney Lopus, who stepped up and did great for us,” said head coach Greg Winslow.

The win continues the women’s streak and gives them an undefeated 7-0 start to the season.

“To be undefeated this far in the season shows the work we have put in this far,” Lopus said. “With each win, we get more and more confidence about our training and where we are as a team.”

The men didn’t have the same luck as the women, as they were defeated 196-98 in their fourth loss of the season.

Despite losing badly, Winslow said the men’s team, which has yet to win a meet this season, made big improvements against UNLV.

“This is the time all season that we didn’t back down even though we weren’t getting a hand on the wall first,” Winslow said. “We really raced and took a big step in the right direction.”

Both teams have a two week break before competing in the Princeton Invitational the first weekend in December.

The men and women will be looking to use the next couple of weeks to rest and recuperate before the three day meet.

“We’re going to continue training but use the break to rest too,” Lopus said. “We want to focus on the details and perfecting our strokes and races.”

The teams are hoping to use the meet to qualify several racers for the NCAA tournament held in March.
