Teacher, hospital volunteer dies

By Michael McFall, Staff Writer

Prominent U professor and volunteer Catherine Newman died on Tuesday at age 83. Newman spent 20 years volunteering at the University Hospital and will also be remembered for her long life as a teacher, according to her obituary published in the Deseret News.

Newman’s life will continue to benefit students through a scholarship fund in her name. The Catherine Newman Teachers Scholarship Fund was created in honor of her 44-year teaching career. In her obituary, her family urges people to donate to the scholarship instead of sending flowers. Fledgling students will benefit from the scholarship, just as Newman’s own pupils benefited from her.

In an online guestbook attached to her obituary, former students shared their memories of a beloved teacher.

“Miss Newman was one of my favorite teachers,” Earl Millham said in the guestbook.

Julie McCray of Salt Lake City said she remembered how her teacher predicted what each student would be doing after he or she graduated high school. She didn’t believe Newman at the time, but her life proved the teacher right, McCray said.

Donations can be sent to The University of Utah Scholarship Fund, 540 Arapeen Drive, Suite 250, Salt Lake City, Utah, 84109.
