Newman declines to enter race for FIU presidency

By Michael McFall, Asst. News Editor

Robert Newman, College of Humanities dean, removed his name from consideration to become the new president of Florida International University, he said in an email.

The university named Newman and 12 others as possibilities for the FIU presidency. One of them, Angel Cabrera, also asked that her name be removed from consideration.

Newman is currently a finalist to become the new president of the University of Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Governor’s Board for Higher Education will make its decision between Newman and the other two candidates at its May meeting.

“Fortunate for him, unfortunate for us; he’s had a lot of people approach him,” said Heidi Camp, assistant dean for advancement and research under Newman. Camp did not know Newman was thought of for the FIU presidency.

“It doesn’t surprise me they were considering him,” she said.
