New courts at U

Students interested in basketball or volleyball have a new place to play. The Outdoor Recreation Program has built three outdoor basketball courts and two sand volleyball courts on some unused land at Fort Douglas. The courts were officially completed three weeks ago and are ready for action.

A new buzz about genetics

In an effort to better understand the effect of steroids on the human body, U researchers are finding out about the birds and bees...and fruit flies. Steroids trigger maturation in all organisms from sixth-graders to fruit flies. There are dozens of steroids in advanced organisms, like human beings, but fruit flies only have one, ecdysone, said Carl Thummel, professor of human genetics and Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

Fixer-upper U golf course

Volleyball gets on track, wins Utah Classic

The U volleyball team came into the weekend in dire need of a jump-start to its season. Finally back in the comfort zone of Crimson Court, the Utes (4-2) got just that Friday and Saturday-and got it in a big way. Hosting the annual Utah Classic, the team toppled all three of its weekend opponents, winning the tournament once again on its home floor.

U soccer splits weekend set after overtime win over Baylor

The U soccer team (4-1) split a two-game set over the weekend in Texas by defeating the Baylor Bears after falling to the Aggies of Texas A&M. On Friday, the Utes played No. 6 Texas A&M to a stalemate for 75 minutes, but could not hold off the Aggies' final offensive barrage, as Katherine Krambeer punched in the game's only goal in the 76th minute.

U suffers narrow loss to A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas-Although the first half was chock-full of big plays that stung the U football team, it was the little things that allowed Texas A&M to narrowly escape with a 28-26 victory. In the first half it seemed that the Aggies (2-0) would rout the Utes (1-1), as Texas A&M jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead.

Suspension of top receiver dooms Utah

COLLEGE STATION, Texas-All he wanted was a box of condoms. Now, U wide receiver Paris Warren is getting a lot more than he bargained for. Warren, who emerged during spring ball as a major offensive weapon on his way to earning the Utes' No. 1 wide receiver spot, was suspended for Saturday-'s showdown at Texas A&M after stealing a $10 box of condoms from a local Smith's store earlier in the week.
