Whitticisms: Applying for Law School? Check Your Soul At the Door

By and January 29, 2003
"Leading research companies have switched from using lab rats in experiments to using lawyers instead. Why?" There are (at least) three answers: 1) There are more lawyers in America than rats. 2) People complain that it's wrong to torture rats. And, my favorite, 3) There are some things you just can't get a rat to do.

Josh Rogers and Jhenai Mootz are artists. Their craft, however, isn't something they can handle with their fingers or place on a shelf to be observed. It is something more elusive than that, something that "exists only in the moment it is being created" as professionals in their field teach.

Letter to the Editor: Keep Tuition System Running as Planned

By and January 29, 2003
Editor: It strikes me as a crass fund-raising initiative for the Web-based tuition payment system to shut down at 9:30 on the evening tuition is due. When income accounting made tuition payment available on the Web, it made a tacit commitment to have it available, particularly until midnight the day tuition is due.

Letter to the Editor: Democracy Speaks

By and January 29, 2003
Editor: I'm writing in response to Jeremy Voros' "Contemplating Peace as my Roommate Goes to War" from Jan. 28. It is hard to analyze a film studies major's critique about the showdown with Iraq because, like all political analysis from Hollywood, it was abundant with ignorance.

Letter to the Editor: Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?

By and January 29, 2003
Editor: I read Jeremy Voros' war thoughts editorial, "Contemplating Peace as my Roommate Goes to War" on Jan. 28 with interest, as it's been a topic I've thought about a lot. My father asked (generically) where were the students of today, given that the students of 1970 were on the front of the anti-war movement.

The Chronicle’s View: The Enforcing the Unenforceable

By and January 29, 2003
The recent antics of a handful of people who were on a trip sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Utah's Freshman Council have drawn attention to U administrators' inconsistent enforcement of the student code of conduct. While many students went to Tijuana, Mexico, including three Chronicle employees, some students violated the code when they drank alcohol in a Tijuana bar.
