Gymnastics: Championships Preview

The NCAA announced the seeding for the 2008 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships on Monday. Utah received the fifth seed of the 12 qualifying teams. A new format, introduced this season, determines a team's National Qualifying Score by adding each team's Regional Qualifying Score -- an average of a select six regular season meets -- to its regional competition score.

Baseball: Swingin’ for the fences

After a disappointing weekend on the road against San Diego State, the U baseball team will try to regroup and get back into the win column against in-state foe Utah Valley State College today at Ute Field at 3 p.m. The Utes (13-17, 3-5) and Wolverines (7-24-1) have met five times this season, with Utah owning a 3-2 series lead.

Study says warming projections accurate

Projections showing that global temperatures could increase by 7 degrees Fahrenheit during the next 100 years are accurate, two U researchers concluded in a study published earlier this month. The study, which was published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, is based on research from U meteorologists Thomas Reichler and Junsu Kim.

Utah softball coach Amy Hogue was beaming because of the play of her squad's two-headed threat from the mound after sophomore Ashley Smuda and freshman Brittany Parker combined to allow six hits over two games against UNLV last weekend. "Both of our pitchers have been great for us this season," Hogue said.

Reimherr selects executive cabinet

Patrick Reimherr, ASUU president-elect, selected his new executive cabinet and created a new position for a deputy chief of staff Monday. Reimherr and his cabinet will take over the Associated Students of the University of Utah in May. The deputy chief of staff position will replace the former executive assistant position.

Utah Jazz: Monday’s game could be a playoff preview

As they say, what goes around comes around. The Utah Jazz closed out its 2007-2008 season Monday night with another convincing home win over the Houston Rockets, 105-96. The win was Utah's 37th home win in 41 tries this year, which ties the second-best home-winning mark in Jazz history.

Students honor favorite professors

Students and faculty members will pay tribute to professors Mark Matheson (English), Scott Black (English), Timothy Edgar (Geography), Richard Sesek (Mechanical Engineering), Yoko Azuma (Languages and Literature) and Christopher Whytock (College of Law).

Students relieved by professor’s dismissal

Several political science students applauded the dismissal of their professor Friday and said starting over from scratch -- a week and a half away from the end of the semester -- was a relief. Political science professor Richard Sherman received an e-mail Thursday from department chair Matthew Burbank informing him that he was "relieved of the responsibility and authority" of teaching his three courses for the remainder of the Spring Semester.
