Baseball: Utes go down south to face ugly, cold nemesis

On paper, there is no reason the U baseball team should have any problem against BYU today. The Utes have convincingly out-hit and out-pitched their neighbors to the south to this point and have fielded just as efficiently. However, statistics and records tend to take a back seat to emotion when the bitter rivalry is taken into account.

Powwow brings diverse community

Dancers adorned with brightly colored feathers, images of animals and beadwork moved as a drum circle kept a constant beat. Some dancers moved gently with the assistance of canes, while others -- too young to dance alone -- held on to the hands of others. Despite differences in age, all participants came together Friday and Saturday for one reason: to dance for Mother Earth at the powwow.

Honor society inducts 24 soon-to-be graduates

Twenty-four students were presented with gold medallions and inducted into the Beehive Honor Society at a banquet March 31. The society recognizes students who have contributed to the U and their communities. Among those inducted was Senior Class President Nicole Nguyen, who is graduating in behavioral science and health.

ASUU picks executive cabinet manager

Next school year's Associated Students of the University of Utah administration chose Yevgeniya Kopeleva as the new chief of staff, the manager of the executive cabinet. Jon Hayes, next year's vice president, said they chose Kopeleva for her various experiences in leadership and organization in other groups around campus, including the Bennion Community Service Center, Housing and Residential Education and the Office of Orientation and Leadership Development.

I'm starting to get that itch, and I've got next to nothing that can scratch it. Life without football is difficult, but the Utes are lending me a helping hand. After reading about Utah's weekend spring game, it looks like the Utes should have a strong season in the fall.

Women’s Hoops: WNBA picks talent today

Ute point guard Leilani Mitchell hopes that her life will change Wednesday. That's when all 14 WNBA teams gather in Tampa, Fla., to take turns choosing the best young talent in the country. Each team is looking to fill its positional needs and perhaps use the draft to find a diamond in the rough.

Men's basketball Former Utah great Arnie Ferrin will be joining the most elite club in college basketball. It was recently revealed that he would be one of several people enshrined into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. The announcement was made Sunday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation.

Lacrosse eases past Utah State, prepares for two-game home stand

The Utah lacrosse team (6-6) beat Utah State (2-5) 14-7 Saturday to continue its unbeaten streak against the Aggies. Utah was led by junior attackman Ryan Watts, who had three goals and two assists. Sophomore attackman Mike Calvert notched two goals and had two assists.

Football: Louks shines in U’s first spring scrimmage

The onlookers might not have recognized some of the faces, but it was the U football team that was at Rice-Eccles Stadium for its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday. Many of the players who will likely be starting by the end of August sat out of the tackle portion of the scrimmage to avoid injury, leaving the door open for some of the younger players and walk-ons.
