SANDY -- It used to be that when firefighters were called to an emergency, the team responded by resorting to a dictatorship. Those in the department with higher rank would give out specific orders to the other officers -- similar the leadership style in the military.

Students ‘die-in’ to protest genocide

U students held a demonstration Friday to protest and raise awareness about genocide in Darfur. In what was called a "die-in," students laid on the ground and pretended to be dead in the Marriott Library Plaza to represent the nearly 400,000 people estimated to have been killed in Darfur.

Softball: Utes stay above .500 with split

Over the weekend, Utah's softball team continued this season's trend of winning some and losing some. Fresh off of splitting a pair against Colorado State last Thursday, Utah yielded a win to New Mexico on Friday, 4-2, but earned it back the next day with a 4-3 victory.

NAFTA is working, undersecretary says

During a visit to the Hinckley Institute of Politics last week, Jeffery Jones, Mexico's undersecretary of agriculture, touted the benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement and advocated his plan of agricultural prosperity for Mexico. Baseball: Errors cost Utes a stronger showing

Friday and Saturday's baseball games between Utah and UVSC couldn't have been more different. On Friday, the two teams couldn't buy a run as both the Utes and Wolverines struggled at the plate. Utah committed error after error in the field and the Wolverines left Franklin Covey Field with a 4-2 victory.

King’s dreams still being fulfilled, speakers say

Accidental debate leads to evolutionary finding

Evidence of how fish evolved to walk on land had been missing until four years ago, when Neil Shubin and his team on Ellesmere Island in Canada discovered an animal that bridges the gap between fish and four-legged animals. Neil Shubin, a University of Chicago professor of organismal biology and anatomy, gave students, faculty and community members a lecture about the "missing link" between fish and tetrapods, or four-legged animals.

Sen. Bob Bennett jokingly called the gathering a "preliminary lunch for Dan Jones' funeral." Others assumed it was a retirement bash for the pollster and professor who has taught civics courses at Utah universities for nearly 50 years. But Dan Jones told a crowd of politicians, students and friends who gathered Friday to honor his career that he doesn't plan to step down anytime soon.
