Med students need to be culturally aware, dean says

By By Jaime Winston and By Jaime Winston April 7, 2008
When Ronald Harris was attending medical school at the University of California, San Francisco more than 20 years ago, a black man was refused surgery for prostate cancer without a reasonable explanation. "There really was no discussion on why he wasn't a good candidate for surgery," said Harris, a dermatologist and the assistant dean of the U School of Medicine.

Football: Louks shines in U’s first spring scrimmage

By By Cody Brunner and By Cody Brunner April 7, 2008
The onlookers might not have recognized some of the faces, but it was the U football team that was at Rice-Eccles Stadium for its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday. Many of the players who will likely be starting by the end of August sat out of the tackle portion of the scrimmage to avoid injury, leaving the door open for some of the younger players and walk-ons.

Pizza: Jayhawks win invokes Utah nostalgia

By and April 7, 2008
While watching the Kansas Jayhawks rock, chalk and shock the North Carolina Tarheels in the second game of the Final Four on Saturday night, I couldn't help relating the feeling to something I'd felt almost exactly a decade earlier. Ironically, the Runnin' Utes shocked the same school on the same stage in the 1998 Final Four.

Bailey: The best policy is open dialogue

By By Ben Bailey and By Ben Bailey April 7, 2008
I dig the new John Mayer single "Say." It deals with an idea that I feel is important but is not followed closely by our society: "Say what you need to say." Sometimes it is sad to think that we live in such a politically correct society. We provide a disclaimer to Mayer's lyrics: "Say what you need to say, but say it as indirectly and abstractly as possible.

Pappas: Some sympathy for the devil

By By Nicholas Pappas and By Nicholas Pappas April 7, 2008
My nephew sang a song for me. He left a message on my phone, a hint of a lisp and laughter in the background. He is 4 years old. I'll never erase it. There are millions of children out there. They are singing, laughing, smiling and hugging their moms. They are also crying, making scenes, hitting other kids and generally laying siege on peace and quiet.

Over the weekend, Utah's softball team continued this season's trend of winning some and losing some. Fresh off of splitting a pair against Colorado State last Thursday, Utah yielded a win to New Mexico on Friday, 4-2, but earned it back the next day with a 4-3 victory.

Letter: Jokes aside, U program provides clean energy opportunity

By and April 4, 2008
Editor: Congratulations on your April 1 issue and on spoofing at least one respondent with the "U gives up on sustainability" article. Despite not being in on the prank, I am happy to have been "quoted" as saying that climate change is "just a theory". That's correct, just like the theories of gravity, evolution, that elements are comprised of atoms, and that HIV causes AIDS.
