Kopaunik: The beasts walk amongst us

By By Janice Kopaunik February 22, 2008
God help me. I am absolutely disgusted right now. The degradation of society has truly reached an all-time low. Impurity continues to leak into society and pollute the minds of the weak with seeds of -- heaven forbid -- sexuality through daytime basic cable.

Charlie Bartlett’ makes for incoherent disappointment

By By Rachel Adams February 22, 2008
I did some research on Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, the production company behind the film "Charlie Bartlett. I couldn't help feeling that "Charlie Bartlett" seemed fake -- an attempt by someone who knows nothing about indie films to produce an impostor indie. Call me paranoid, but during "Bartlett," I kept picturing a spy taking notes on all of the independent films he's ever seen and reporting to some fat cat in a big studio. "Nudity," he would note hoarsely after watching "American Beauty" (which only barely counts, but of course he wouldn't know that).

Rugby: Poised for ‘Miracle on grass’?

By By Jason Peterson February 22, 2008
In the 1980 Winter Olympics, a team of 20 Americans shocked the world by beating the heavily favored Soviets for the gold medal in hockey. Because the victory is considered one of the greatest upset stories in history, the U rugby team has been taking notes all week.

Softball: Game is fun gain

By By Jason Peterson February 22, 2008
Anyone found on last year's U softball roster -- and two players who weren't -- will vouch for the fact that things are running a little more smoothly this year. Senior Kristie Keller said that the differences between this year's 7-3 start and last year's 3-5-1 start extend beyond the records.

Rail Jam strikes chord with crowd

By By Kirk Taylor February 22, 2008
By all measures the Cricket Campus Railjam was a success. The 20 foot-high scaffolding was striking to say the least and the music could be heard all across campus. DJ Gristified kept solid tunes spinning throughout the competition while the participants and crowd vibed on.

Ute Briefs (2/22)

February 22, 2008
Rested ski team ready for regionals With the regular season over, the Utah ski team will head to Montana to compete in the NCAA West Regionals at Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch. Two weeks ago, the team competed in the New Mexico Invitational and finished fifth.

Mozart’s “Magic Flute” stimulates mind and body

By By Christie Franke February 22, 2008
When Mozart wrote his opera "The Magic Flute," neither he nor anyone else knew that it would be his final work. The singspiel -- a thoroughly German type of production that mixed operatic singing with the spoken word -- premiered in Vienna on Sept. 30, 1791, to great success -- and no doubt lifted the spirits of poor Mozart, which had been lowered by repeated illness.

Men’s Hoops: MWC Power Rankings

By By Cody Brunner February 22, 2008
1. BYU (21-5, 10-1) Up next: @ SDSU 2/23 With the 67-59 win over Utah on Wednesday, it is now the Cougars' title to lose. The versatility they showed in beating the Utes cannot be matched in the MWC. Still, BYU showed that its Teflon coat isn't without holes.

Rail Jam invites student competitors

By By Jessica Dunn February 22, 2008
The Cricket Campus Rail Jam Tour jibbed up the U on Thursday afternoon as a slew of skiers and snowboarders attempted to traverse a man-made setup. The setup included a down box, a kinked rail and a down rail. The box and down rail were set up along the edges of a structure with a 10-foot drop off each side.

Baseball: Annual detriments haunt U baseball team

By By Cody Brunner February 22, 2008
The 2008 U baseball season hasn't begun, but the team is already at a disadvantage. It's no surprise to them, though. The Utes are at a disadvantage nearly every season. Those are the breaks when you live and play in Salt Lake City, where sleet and snow can douse the ground well into March and thus force baseball teams to play indoors for the first couple of months.
