Ute volleyball prepares for in-state battle with UVSC

At one point, the U volleyball team might have looked at tonight's match against UVSC as a nice way to break up the conference schedule. But now, there is no chance the Utes will take their 7 p.m. road match with the Wolverines lightly. With the Utes carrying a three-match losing streak into Orem, they can't just use cruise control against the Wolverines.

Brighton outlaws early jibbing

Brighton Resort recently posted some new signs. But they weren't shiny new welcome signs or a new trail map. The signs banned preseason riders from jibbing on Brighton's rails and boxes. They read, "Due to vandalism and total disrespect, Brighton's property is closed to preseason jibbing.

Conference raises poverty awareness in Utah

One out of every 10 Utahns lives below the poverty line, according to Utah Issues -- an alarming fact in a state where more than one out of every three individuals is a child. U students, community members and nonprofit organizations -- including Utah Issues, an organization aimed at improving the quality of life for residents -- hosted the Urgency of Now Poverty Awareness Conference at the Fort Douglas Officer's Club on Thursday to raise awareness about these facts.

Salt Lake City mayoral candidate Ralph Becker is being criticized by opponent Dave Buhler for his work as a consultant on a new U museum. Bear West, Becker's environmental consulting firm, conducted the environmental impact statement for the new Utah Museum of Natural History, which is set to be built on the undeveloped foothills above Research Park adjacent to Red Butte Gardens.

At the event, sponsored by the Associated Students of the University of Utah Presenter's Office, Weinberg will leave his drum set behind to put on a free one-man show for U students, talking about his experiences in the music industry and as both an artist and producer.

Student dorms robbed

Housing and Residential Education officials are warning students to lock their doors in the Residence Halls after a string of thefts happened over the weekend. Thieves were able to leave the dorms with more than $8,000 worth of items, which included six laptops, backpacks, iPods and a Nintendo Wii.

Cameron Hansen was one of 700 people who applied last summer to become one of the Utah Jazz basketball team's bloggers this season. Hansen, a sophomore majoring in entrepreneurship, was one of 12 awarded the position and said he is ecstatic about his new role.

Editor: I was a little disappointed to pick up The Chrony and read the silliness on the opinion page. It wasn't so much the outright insanity that bothered me (as this is what one regularly expects from this page) as that it was outright insanity that, if carried out at a community-wide level, will affect my children.

Volleyball: Utes battered by Rams in loss

The advantage of the U volleyball team venturing into the conference schedule for the second time this season is that the Utes should be more familiar with their conference opponents. The problem is that the opponents also have a better understanding of the Utes.
