Crimson Nights only allotted $5,000

By By Rochelle McConkie September 26, 2007
The Union Programming Council will get its party, but on a smaller scale than it's used to. After nearly an hour of heated debate and three amendments, the ASUU General Assembly passed a bill last night granting $5,000 to the UPC to fund Crimson Nights, a monthly late-night party held in the Union that typically hosts thousands of students.

U, Utah State square off in blood drive

By By Parker Williams September 26, 2007
Saturday's homecoming football game isn't the only competition the U is facing this week. The fifth annual "Bleed Red" blood drive competition between Utah State University and the U will run through the rest of the week. The U won the first "Bleed Red" competition in 2003. But for the last three years, despite having a student body that is roughly half the size of the U's, Utah State has won the competition by donating more blood. Last year, Utah State donated 754 units of blood versus the U's 485. The winning school will be announced during the homecoming game against Utah State. "We're really trying to get the community involved," said Craig Hammond, Associated Students of the University of Utah community service director. Hammond said one reason the U has lost the competition for the past three years is because people simply don't know about it.

Black fraternity plans campus return

By By Parker Williams September 26, 2007
A familiar fraternity is attempting to return to campus this semester. The historically black Omega Psi Phi fraternity, originally established at the U in the 1980s, disappeared from campus several years ago because of lack of interest among students. Professor William Smith has been working closely with U administrators to help bring the undergraduate chapter of Omega Psi Phi back to the U.

Free market fallacy

By By Matteo Jensen September 26, 2007
Free trade and free markets are myths. They have never existed. Yet the legend is perpetuated by academic advocates who entrench themselves in the "Ivory Tower" as Saruman the White resided at Orthanc. Through the mystical power of tenure, these sages wrap themselves in immunity from the immutable market forces.

The impending rise of Emperor Sancho II

By By Steve Coons September 26, 2007
Little needs to be said about the sorry state of U.S. liberals in mid-2005, when they found themselves one year into an extended Republican reign and a year prior to the conclusion of a decade of failure. Hurricane Katrina had yet to swing public opinion, and Pat Roberts seemed poised to personally slit the throat of any Supreme Court judge who wasn't a card-holding member of the NRA.

Ute notebook: Football team still searching for winning formula

By By Cody Brunner September 26, 2007
Stopping the sieve The same porous running defense that plagued the Utes in both the Air Force and Oregon State losses showed up against UNLV, allowing the Rebels' Frank Summers to rack up 193 rushing yards and two touchdowns. "Our run defense has been an issue and it's not schematics," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said.

College of health shows little confidence in dean

By By Rochelle McConkie September 25, 2007
Many faculty members in the College of Health expressed dissatisfaction with their dean in a survey taken last spring -- results that Dean James Graves attributes to anxieties caused by his efforts to reorganize the college and target external funding to make the college more research-oriented.
