Team grades

August 24, 2007
Secondary: B The defensive backfield for the Utes is as talented as it is young. Both Brice McCain and Sean Smith have tremendous speed and are shutdown cornerbacks. Smith's frame at corner (6-3, 217 lbs.) will allow him to match up with almost any receiver in the league.

Football notebook: Running back position still undecided

By By Cody Brunner August 24, 2007
Shuffling the deck Earlier this week, the Utah coaching staff made the decision to switch sophomore offensive lineman Zane Beadles from left guard to left tackle. The Utes initially moved junior lineman Corey Seiuli to left tackle to fill the void left by injured senior Jason Boone, but Seiuli was more comfortable as an interior lineman, so he was moved to left guard.

A kicker with his sanity intact?

By By Natalie Dicou August 24, 2007
In pop culture, kickers are often portrayed as head cases. The plot of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", for instance, involves a kicker who goes crazy after missing a potential Super Bowl-winning field goal. It's not too surprising that kickers are sometimes considered a little kooky-if you think about it.

By By Tony Pizza and Mandeep Gill August 24, 2007
8/30/07 @ Oregon State: The Utes will open their season on the road in front of a hostile crowd in Corvallis. The Beavers finished 10-4 last year, including an upset win over this year's predicted national champion USC. The Beavers return 18 starters from last year, but there is good news for the Utes: OSU star receiver Sammy Stroughter has taken a leave of absence to deal with personal issues.

MUSS still thriving

By By Natalie Dicou August 24, 2007
Many people predicted that the MUSS would crumble when Urban Meyer left for Gator Nation. Those people couldn't be more wrong. The MUSS, with or without Meyer, is thriving. In the two years since Meyer left, the Utes went 7-5 and 8-5. By many Ute fans' standards, the past two years have been mediocre.

Life of Brian: Just six days away

By By Cody Brunner August 24, 2007
The U football team is merely six days away from kicking off the 2007 season against Oregon State, and nobody is more ready than junior quarterback Brian Johnson. Johnson was recently named to yet another preseason watch list-this time the Davey O'Brien Award, which goes to the best quarterback in the nation.

UTA overhaul

By By Rochelle McConkie August 24, 2007
When Carlos Forcadilla arrived at his routine UTA bus stop on 6th Avenue on Thursday morning to catch a ride to the U, he noticed a bright yellow sign posted at the stop with the words "BUS STOP ELIMINATED." Like many Utah Transit Authority passengers, Forcadilla will have to alter his daily transportation practices to match changes following the UTA bus-route redesign that will be implemented this weekend.
