Hairspray’ stands straight up!

August 4, 2007

A few instructions for newcomers

By By Nicholas Pappas August 3, 2007
Dear freshmen, Welcome to the U. I used to be you. I walked around campus with a look of bewilderment. I read the newspaper in the coliseum that was Art History (merely a speck in a classroom of 300), sent text messages to other humans in "Does ET Exist?" (it sounded so easy!) and slept peacefully through Structure of English (isn't that a 5000-level class?).

Telecourses: Great, but scarce

By By Melissa Schack August 3, 2007
During Summer Semester I discovered something: telecourses. They are just like online courses, except they are supported by funding, last only the length of the semester and the lectures are on TV. This option provides such a flexible way of doing things. Not only do you get to decide when you want to watch the lectures, but, unlike normal classes, you can watch them as many times as you want.

Read this newspaper

Rule one of column writing is to not alienate the audience by preaching. Chrony Opinion Editor Lindsey Sine and her predecessor, Matt Piper, have unceasingly stressed this to the paper's clan of pundits during their summer-long, two-a-day, how-to-impose-your opinion-on-the-world accelerated sessions.

Rushing into greek life

By By Jonathan Long August 3, 2007
If you have ever wondered what it's like to be greek and are looking for new friends across campus, you might want to mark Aug. 21 on your calendar. The date marks the beginning of Rush, the first week of recruitment for fraternities and sororities at the U.

Sorority, fraternity hopefuls have different experiences

By By Lauren Mangelson August 3, 2007
Every August, sorority and fraternity members at the U gear up for the biggest production of the year: Recruitment Week. Commonly known as Rush Week, Recruitment Week is an extravaganza of activities and interviews. With the exception of those members who have had family or friends in sororities or fraternities, most people enter Rush Week with little knowledge of what to expect, or the differences between houses.

Textbook updates prove costly

August 3, 2007
As wholesale and alternative suppliers gain a larger share of the college textbook market, publishers are releasing more new editions. Although popular with some professors, the frequent revisions might be limiting the availability of affordable textbooks.

Bookstore profits: Where does the money go?

By By Carlos Mayorga August 3, 2007
As Fall Semester draws nearer, students may cringe at the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on textbooks. But as they prepare to fork over hard-earned cash, some may wonder where exactly their money is going. Through the end of May 2007, in the fiscal year ending the last day of June, University Bookstore textbook sales amounted to $9.

Around the block

When it comes to the arts, Salt Lake City gets a bad rap. The assumption among outsiders remains that Salt Lake City is a second-tier fine-arts community. Nothing could be further from the truth. With more than 20 galleries in city limits -- exhibiting art works ranging from classical to modern in all ranges of media -- Salt Lake City boasts one of the largest per-capita fine arts communities in the Western United States.
