Smoke tax would be fine

December 2, 2008

Many smokers might want to quit. However, many others have no desire to quit; I personally know such smokers. Thus, it's not fair to call a tax increase a "sin tax," or even a "stupid tax." An appropriate name could be "you are causing health care costs to increase, so you should be the one to pay for it-tax."

The traitor among us

By By Natalie Dicou November 20, 2007
Once Utah and BYU fans pick a side, they rarely waver. In fact, trading red for blue, or vice versa, is often seen as a shocking betrayal. But for Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, the transition went surprisingly smoothly. "I was loyal to Utah the day I got here," Whittingham said.

Media hinders U.S. efforts

December 4, 2006
Editor: Matthew Piper really hit the nail on the head in his article "Gameboy media: We've reached a new level" (Dec. 1). In fact, I made the same comment, "The media's coverage is a self-fulfilling prophecy," just a couple of weeks ago in my political science class.

The American Football Coaches Association named the versatile senior defensive back an All-American after a stellar regular season in which he picked off six passes and scored eight touchdowns.

To protest or not to protest

Dayne Goodwin, U custodian, felt the need to mobilize in 2003 as he foresaw the United States' attack of Iraq. Goodwin, a lifelong activist, wanted the U community to take a larger part in anti-war efforts. In February of that year, he and a number of professors and graduate students created the Campus Coalition for Peace and Justice to organize and publicize anti-war events.

Dumpster-diving through history

By By Andy Miller February 22, 2006
An extensive American Indian garbage dump is providing new ideas on how ancient people interacted with their environment. Jack Broughton, U associate professor of anthropology, has shown that California's native peoples had a profound impact on bird populations living near what is now San Francisco.

Freedom of the press versus sensitivity and respect (Fawson)

By By Jessica Fawson February 15, 2006
The freedom of the press is granted as a right in the United States Constitution-but that doesn't give the media a blank check when it comes to what we print or say. A free society needs a free press, but that doesn't mean that respect and sensitivity should fly out the window.

The U should have a full-time tuition plateau

February 10, 2006
Editor: As I read the article in the Chronicle ("How to shorten your stay," Feb. 9), that referred to the long years that many students spend working toward a four-year degree, I could not help but think about something that has troubled me for some time.
