Friend’ donations go to newborn ICU

The Student Health Advisory Committee is asking people at the U to donate a friend and brighten someone's day. From plush Jeff Gordon dolls to bright, stuffed SpongeBob SquarePants figures, the committee has collected nearly 100 toys, which it will donate to the University Hospital's Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

U remembers Holocaust victims

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the "Days of Remembrance" that memorialize the victims of the Holocaust. The weeklong event coincides with the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 18, said Leo Leckie, executive assistant in the Office of Diversity.

College of Pharmacy provides a diabetic friendly egg hunt

Children with diabetes hunted for Easter eggs filled with sugar-free candy Saturday at Sugar House Park. The second annual Spring Egg Hunt for Children with Diabetes was held by the U College of Pharmacy's honorary fraternity, the Beta Epsilon chapter of Rho Chi.

Meyer reaching out to the entire student body

It's all about reaching out to the student body for U football coach Urban Meyer. In his first year at the U, Meyer instilled a new tradition where the team would have to sing the fight song with the students after every home victory. This season, he decided to let two student body members try out and make the team as part of the kickoff coverage squad.

ROTC program has a successful year thanks to new leader

The Army ROTC program has doubled the number of commissioned students requested by the Army this year. According to Col. Edwin Frederick, head of the U's ROTC program, the Army asked the program to commission at least 12 students. In his first year as head of the program, Frederick will commission-or award second lieutenant status-more than 25 cadets.

Utes take care of business against Aggies, 4-2

In its first game of the season at Ute field, the U softball team came through with a 4-2 win in a close battle against Utah State. Although the Aggies came into the match only having won three games on the year, it was no surprise to U coach Mona Stevens that the match was close and went down to the wire.

The U men's and women's track teams opened the 2004 outdoor season with a strong showing last weekend at the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational in Sacramento, Calif. The Utes brought home a remarkable seven gold medals from a meet featuring four other schools.

Humanities College honors prof, student teacher

Each year, the College of Humanities presents one teacher and one graduate student teacher with the Ramona W. Cannon Award for teaching excellence in the humanities. This year's distinguished honors went to Janet Theiss and Brikena Ribaj. Theiss is a professor in the department of history and currently teaches two courses-one on Chinese and Asian History and another on comparative gender history.
