Philly future in the air

Sometimes it's best to forget the mistakes of the past and focus on the future. The Utah Jazz will likely shudder at the memory of each turnover and each missed opportunity late in Monday's 113-109 loss at Madison Square Garden. The truth that might be hardest to swallow is that the New York Knicks just could have Utah's number.

When asked if it was good to have nine days between games after the Runnin' Utes lost to Santa Clara on Nov. 19, head coach Jim Boylen said matter-of-factly, "Not for those guys in the locker room." Gulp. Instead of using the Thanksgiving holiday as a break, Boylen and the Utes (2-2) practiced as much as they could within the constraints of the NCAA rules.

Sustainability office seeks intern

The U's Office of Sustainability is offering an internship position for Spring Semester. Interns will work with office staff, fellow interns and volunteers on a variety of projects and issues focused on campus sustainability. Craig Forster, interim director, said the position provides a "unique experience" for hands-on involvement tackling issues surrounding environmental sustainability.

Macy’s gives $25k to Rock the U

A $25,000 donation from the Macy's Foundation recently jump-started Rock the U dance marathon fundraising efforts to fight cancer. The donation will directly support research through the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. Rock the U Director Chelsea Baugh said the sum will push the group closer to its goal of raising $200,000 by the dance marathon on March 28.

Christine Passey remembers working with a grandmother whose granddaughter ran away. The teenage girl had stopped going to school and was writing to someone in prison. Passey could tell the grandmother was worried, so she talked to her about how to work with the teen.

Utah schools looking to share data

Phil Smith wants to test methods of capturing harmful carbon dioxide gases, but he says without a new data link between Utah colleges he can't run the simulations needed to test his ideas. The program, called the Utah GRID system, would allow researchers at the U and Utah State University to digitally share information and computer software.
