Bowling for (a few) dollars: Utes will see gains from Emerald Bowl, although not too many monetary ones

December 2, 2005
It may not be the Fiesta Bowl, but San Francisco is where the U football team will find itself at year's end, as the Utes try to cap off an up-and-down season on a winning note. While the hype surrounding this year's bowl game is modest, to say the least, compared with last season's pomp and circumstance, Ute players and coaches expect the Emerald Bowl to bring plenty of rewards.

Whew! Runnin’ Utes beat USU in down-to-the-wire epic

December 1, 2005
The Runnin' Utes exorcised their demons Wednesday night, beating Utah State a year after losing to their in-state rivals by 26 in Logan. But for a split second, it looked like the Utes (4-0) were going to fall again to the Aggies (2-2). All the emotion in the Huntsman Center and clutch shooting was about to go for naught, because USU sharpshooter Jaycee Carroll found himself open from 18 feet with the Utes clinging to a one-point lead with only seconds remaining.

Men’s Hoops: A closer look at the starters: #20, Bryant Markson

March 10, 2005
S o THIS is what the hype was about. Recruited by Kentucky and Arizona out of high school, Markson followed Tim Drisdom to Utah, where he promptly took residence on Rick Majerus' bench. Markson's high-flying, up-tempo style of play didn't suit the coach, so Bryant sat.

Men’s Hoops: A closer look at the starters: #13, Richard Chaney

March 10, 2005
I t's been a bit of a quiet year for the V.P., having battled a broken hand and losing his starting job to Markson. But when some players would have pouted, Chaney just went about his business, playing hard and picking up the scoring slack when other Utes went cold.

No poker for U: University administrators cancel on-campus card tournament

February 23, 2005
Several U students were surprised to find out Tuesday morning that the Student Poker Open, a poker tournament with a $20 entry fee, would not be held this week in the Union Ballroom. The tournament, originally scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, had been prominently advertised by the Big SLC Poker Club in last week's Chronicle and in flyers that were distributed all around campus.

Bookstore blues

January 25, 2005
Two competitors in the textbook industry can at least agree on one thing: textbooks cost too much. Junior Jeremy Christensen said that his books for one class this semester cost between $300 and $350. "I was like, 'Whoa, that's a lot of money,'" he said.

Let’s open a ‘Reign of the Readers’

January 24, 2005
The Chronicle's opinion page is supposed to be a forum for discussing issues faced by members of the U community. The page has many contributors: staffers write columns and readers write letters. But we at the Chrony would like to hear more from you, the reader, and so propose some new opportunities for you to tell us what you're thinking.
