U Profile: From sand to snow

Lue Cee Rusiang Kotaro, a senior in psychology, is from a worldly family. Kotaro, whose friends call her "Rus," is from the South Pacific island of Palau. Her twin sister is studying medicine in Fiji, and her brother lives in Seattle. After spending one year at Palau Community College, Kotaro decided to come to the United States.

U administrators and the student government have combined forces on yet another survey, supposedly aimed at answering the big question: Should health insurance be mandatory for U students? The health insurance debate is one of the most daunting issues students currently face.

Showdown in the Sooner State (Swimming)

After the women finished a disappointing third and the men finished fourth in last year's Mountain West Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, the Utes will be looking for a better finish to their team schedule this time around. The Ute swimming and diving teams are at the Oklahoma City Community College Aquatic Center today for day one of the four-day competition that concludes Saturday.

Bogut’s back?but so is heartbreak (Men’s Hoops)

While Andrew Bogut was lauded at halftime for his numerous Ute accomplishments, the current Utes lived up to what has come to be expected this season-close, but no cigar. For the second-straight game, the Utes (12-12, 5-8 MWC) had a chance in their final possession, but for the second-straight game they came away with a loss: They fell 52-51 to Air Force (21-5, 9-4 MWC) Saturday night at the Huntsman Center.

Battling for beauty

Karsten Heuer, a park ranger and wildlife biologist, spoke at the Salt Lake City Library on Feb. 15 to present his book, "Being Caribou," as part of the College of Law's Wallace Stegner lecture series. The book is about Heuer's six-month journey with the porcupine caribou herd in 2003 from the Yukon to the Alaskan Wildlife Refuge, during which he studied their migration.

Ivory Homes provides eight new scholarships

Hispanic students with parents in the construction industry have another reason to build up their educations. Clark Ivory, CEO of Ivory Homes, announced on Jan. 25 that he will create eight new scholarships for Hispanic students at the U in the next five years.

Abortion film fosters discussion

Women have abortions for many reasons, said members of Students for Choice Monday, Jan. 23, in honor of the 33rd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion in the United States. The film "The Abortion Diaries," by Penny Lane, was screened in the Post Theater.
