Letter to the Editor: Remember Tolerance

By By Jessica Done and By Jessica Done September 24, 2002
Editor: I would like to reply to those of you who have voiced your distaste for the university's "Beyond Tolerance" theme in remembrance of the Sept. 11 victims, including Aaron Chambers and particularly law students such as Mathew Higbee. It seems you insist on wallowing in your guttural reaction to the terrorist attack.

Letter to the Editor: New Web Design Improvement

By By Christopher Condrat and By Christopher Condrat September 24, 2002
Editor: After reading about the new beta for the U Web site, http://www.utah.edu/beta/, I decided to pay a visit to see what the proposed design would be. In a word, the design is awful. The site looks tacky and amateurish, from type to layout. The menu system on the current Web page may be a pain to use, but how is this one any better? And why is the webmaster using Macromedia Flash? Flash is for animations or visually complex sites, not for a site intended to reach a large audience.

Letter to the Editor: Rock the Political Parties

By By Paul Emett and By Paul Emett September 23, 2002
Editor: If the purpose of the Associated Students of the University of Utah's Rock the Vote event is to increase students' influence in government, then student leaders miss their mark. The greatest influence a citizen may have on state, local or even national government is exercised within the framework of a political party.

Letter to the Editor: Get Out of Pseudo-Intellectual Atheism

By By Clint Roberts and By Clint Roberts September 23, 2002
Editor: In response to Chris Yeates' Sept. 20 rant about evolution, design and spiritual thumb-sucking, "Get out of the Religious Womb," let me count the ways in which the only sucking sound is emanating from his argument. It's hard to take seriously the verbal spewings of anyone for whom the issues are so rooted in personal bias and anger.

Utah Attack Struggles For Second Week

By and September 22, 2002
ANN ARBOR, Mich.?The clock read 8:50 left in the fourth quarter. The play: An eight-yard gain on a swing pass to wide receiver Travis LaTendresse. The significance: It was the first time the Ute offense had crossed midfield. The Ute offense, particularly the running game, sputtered for the second straight week as the Utes couldn't put together a worthwhile drive nearly all game.

Letter to the Editor: Have Open Mind for Redfest

By By Chris Sheehan and By Chris Sheehan September 22, 2002
Editor: I'm writing in response to the Sept. 20 letter to the editor by Steve Davis, "Redfest Misses the Point." Davis says he prides himself on being one of the smartest people on campus, but it sounds like his mind is pretty closed to me. I am only a freshman, so this is my first Redfest, but it seems to me that the point of Redfest is to allow students to expand their minds, try new things, meet new people and have fun.

Family Practice: Being Mom & Med Student at the U

By and September 22, 2002
\Soleil, Indigo and Uinta Cook regularly enjoy the outings most girls do: piano and dance lessons, camping trips and local festivals. But one outing was particularly enjoyable for them?watching their mother Paula don the first white coat of her career during the U's White Coat Ceremony honoring medical students.

Letter to the Editor: Redfest Misses the Point

By By Steve Davis and By Steve Davis September 19, 2002
Editor: I pride myself on being one of the smartest guys on campus. However, it does not take brilliance to see that this year's Redfest activities are going down the toilet. In fact, they never even had a chance at success to begin with. First of all, it seems to me that by charging students to see no-name acts, Redfest organizers are asking students to not come at all.

Letter to the Editor: No Single Lesson of Sept. 11

By By Jeff Hullinger and By Jeff Hullinger September 19, 2002
Editor: In his Sept. 16 letter to the editor, "Attackers Are Not the Heroes", Jonathan Richardson apparently wants to place limits on our ability to "learn lessons" about Sept. 11, and assume for everyone, that we should learn the "real lesson." I wonder what Richardson would think if he learned that many sons and daughters of the victims of the World Trade Center opposed the bombing of Afghanistan in which the "collateral damages" were innocent people who had nothing to do with Sept.

Letter to the Editor: Machen Overdoes Tolerance

By By Mathew Higbee and By Mathew Higbee September 18, 2002
Editor: After reading President Machen's speech on Sept. 11, I was left wondering if anyone could deliver a more inadequate or self-absorbed speech with a straight face. On the anniversary of the worst crime ever committed against the United States, how could Machen fail to speak of the need to continue to pursue justice? How could he not thank or even mention the men and women in service who are putting their lives on the line to prevent such an atrocity from occurring again? Machen treated the crowd to inane babble about tolerance, diversity and the need to "seek a collective solution to the current dilemma.
