Letter to the Editor: Empathy for the Islamic World

By By Christopher Condrat and By Christopher Condrat September 17, 2002
Editor: I found Jonathan Richardson's Sept. 16 letter regarding tolerance and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, "Attackers Are Not Heroes" a little blind. His example of a girl being raped is actually a good one, but in a different way. Switching the roles, representing the terrorists as the girl and the rapist as the United States?wouldn't the response be different? Imagine also that the girl struck back at the rapist, but that the response was not to understand why the girl attacked the rapist but instead to defend the rapist against the girl being raped.

Letter to the Editor: Take the Union Back from Chartwells

By By Don MacAngus and By Don MacAngus September 17, 2002
Editor: I am a student at the U law school, and I just paid my tuition, so of course I have no money. Anyway, the other day I was studying, which is the story of my life these days, and I thought I would walk over to the Union and grab a slice of pizza and some water.

Letter to the Editor: Tolerance is Still Important

By By Emma Pfister and By Emma Pfister September 16, 2002
Editor: I'm writing in response to Aaron Chambers' Sept. 12 letter to the editor, "Mourning First, Diversity Second." Even though I have found many disagreeable facets to Chamber's letter, I am choosing to focus on one item which I feel is rather pertinent.

The Good, the Bad, and the @#$%

By and September 16, 2002
For days I have been trying to write this column?days. Each day I put it off for the same reason: lack of motivation, or lack of inspiration, really. Basically I just don't have anything to bitch about. I like to bitch about things, but light things, you know.

Letter to the Editor: Don’t Take Liberties for Granted

By By David Sundwall and By David Sundwall September 12, 2002
Editor: I was disturbed by the tasteless headline and ridiculous lead article in the Sept. 11 issue of The Chronicle, "U.S. Gov't Continues To Promote Anti-American Feeling Worldwide". Most of the panelists at the Hinckley Institute-sponsored event appeared oblivious to the fact that our country has the luxury to even worry about "health care, environment [and] women's issues," because of the freedoms it has fought to protect.

Winning Lottery Number Is 9-1-1

By and September 12, 2002
ALBANY, N.Y.?Officials say it was just a coincidence, but many people found it chilling and maybe suspicious, too: On the anniversary of Sept. 11, the winning numbers in the New York lottery were 9-1-1. Lottery officials said Thursday that 5,631 people had selected the tragic numbers.

Letter to the Editor: Mourning First, Diversity Second

By By Aaron Chambers and By Aaron Chambers September 11, 2002
Editor: In response to the email sent by President Machen to university students and staff regarding the university's "Moving Beyond Tolerance" t heme for the Sept. 11 commemoration,I would like to respectfully point something out. I find the opening statement disheartening.

Ordinary People Are True Heroes of Sept. 11

By and September 11, 2002
The bus was usually pretty full and I was happy to find a seat near the back on Sept. 11, 2001. I put my bag on the floor and took a minute to look around. Although I had only been taking the 8:02 bus for a couple of weeks, most of the people looked somewhat familiar, like the people you recognize but don't really know from school.

Letter to the Editor: Finding Meaning in Loss

By By Jason Moore and By Jason Moore September 10, 2002
Editor: I'm writing in response to Chris Yeates' column "Fatalism Trivializes Human Suffering," in the Sept. 5 Chronicle. My cousin also committed suicide. His death was not a matter of chance or the result of some random event, it was the calculated result of an orderly plan?his own.

Letter to the Editor: Stop Whining: The U Isn’t All That Bad

By By Jon Blutarski and By Jon Blutarski September 10, 2002
Editor: If you read Brandon McKay's letter to the editor, "Reflections of a Sixth-Year Senior" in the Sept. 9, 2002 Chronicle, you probably cried a few tears after hearing about his six-year prison sentence as an undergraduate at the U. Among many of McKay's hardships were parking and construction woes as well as a lack of "value and competent staff" at the university.
