Year in review: Animal rights group denied U records

July 2 Student animal-rights group Utah Primate Freedom was denied access to records when it asked the U for names and salaries of all faculty involved in animal testing. The group decided to advocate their cause by staging protests in front of the homes of U researchers who participate in animal testing in late 2006 and early 2007.

Wife arrested for slapping husband

A U student was arrested and booked in jail after her husband told police that she had slapped him during an argument. Jennifer Bassett, an exercise and sport science major at the U, was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on Sunday for assaulting her husband, whose name was not released.

New robot retrieves library books

Next time you visit the U's Marriott Library, a new four-story robot might be able to help you find books. The robot is one of three new systems the library has installed to make it quicker and easier for patrons to obtain information. "We wanted to do everything we could to make the library experience best for users," said Ian Godfrey, the library's facilities and access services manager.

Study finds ‘dark stars’

It is possible that the first stars in the universe did not shine. According to a recent U study, invisible dark stars could have formed 13 billion years ago from the presence of dark matter. Dark matter is still unseen and unidentified, but scientists believe that it makes up most of the universe.

Romney has son’s vote

Students wanting to support Mitt Romney's campaign didn't have to go far to hear from someone who knows the presidential candidate well. His son, Josh Romney, spoke to about two dozen U students Thursday night in a lecture hall at the Language and Communication Building.

U remembers landmark heart surgery

Barney Clark's rapidly failing heart led doctors to push up his artificial heart transplant surgery. Critics argued that the surgery had only worked on animals before and was too new to be used on a human. Although the surgery, performed at the U, gave Clark only another three-and-a-half months to live, members of the medical community still consider it a success 25 years later.

Drug policy targets minorities

Drug policies of the federal government negatively affect medical patients in need of medication and cause minorities to be prosecuted more than other drug offenders, according to a new book written by U professors. Drugs and Justice: Seeking a Consistent, Coherent Comprehensive View, a book written by seven authors and four contributing authors from the U and Utah's legal community, says government drug policies are "incoherent" and explains why these "unjust" policies continue.

Optimism in the Iraq war

Although the war in Iraq is failing, Americans need to have confidence that the United States will achieve some sort of victory, said Philip Gordon, a senior fellow for U.S. foreign policy at the Brookings Institution. At the U's Middle East lecture series last Thursday, Gordon presented a lecture based on his new book, Winning the Right War: The Path to Security for American and the World.

The U women's basketball team found itself in unfamiliar territory Monday night at USC. The Utes (5-2) fell into a 17-point hole by halftime and ultimately lost the road game 62-45 after playing a more competitive second half. Utah has played in a variety of games this year.

Battle of the bands decides Kerfuffle opener

Local band Good Morning Maxfield will play at ASUU's Grand Kerfuffle, the U's annual music festival, in April. The decision was announced after the Battle of the Bands concert held last Friday night in the Union Ballroom, which featured four local bands and MxPx.
