It’s a whole new ballgame

The U baseball team has plenty of reasons to sulk. The Utes could be focusing on the subpar 24-31 record they accumulated earlier this year, or how the 2007 season ended prematurely. They could also gripe about the fact that their best hitter (Jay Brossman), and arguably their best pitcher (Eric King), both graduated and are no longer with the team.

Hospital hikes security

University Hospital officials are taking steps to increase security measures when treating inmates following the June shooting of a Utah Department of Corrections Officer in Research Park. Officer Stephen Anderson was shot and killed by inmate Curtis Allgier, who was undergoing an MRI at the U Orthopaedic Center.

Freshmen must fulfill international requirement

As the new semester begins, new students will have more to worry about than just finding their classes. Beginning this fall, incoming freshmen and transfer students will be required to take an approved international-themed class before they can graduate. The U's international programs website states that the requirement was designed "to give students a broad base of knowledge about global issues and about global perspectives.

Clubs reflect the U’s diversity

Students on campus this fall may take advantage of the resources and diverse student clubs the U offers. The Center for Ethnic Student Affairs, located in Union Room 318, focuses on recruiting and retaining underrepresented and ethnic minority students at the U.

Program takes off

About 10,000 recycling containers ranging from curbside bins to office-sized waste cans have been placed around campus as part of a new recycling effort. Plant Operations employee Will Chatwin said recycling on campus isn't revolutionary, but that Plant Operations is coordinating it on a campus-wide scale for the first time.

More open spots

Parking spaces on campus are opening up this school year while construction sites near completion and temporary overflow sites allow more vehicles. "Parking availability on main campus is expected to be better this year than any time over the previous 15 years," said Alma Allred, director of Commuter Services.
