Tennis teams look to bounce back this weekend

By Christopher Kamrani, Asst. Sports Editor

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams are looking to get on the winning track this weekend as they prepare to take on two Western Athletic Conference teams.

The No. 43 women’s squad (3-4) will face off against the visiting Nevada Wolfpack on Sunday at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes are coming off a sweep loss to the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 7-0, but head coach Mat Iandolo said he is confident heading into the stretch of the season as they prepare for some tough competition.

“The University of Nevada is a very strong team,” Iandolo said in a statement. “We have had some very competitive matches over the years against them, including last year’s long and hard-fought 4-3 match. We are looking forward to competing against them on our home courts this Sunday.”

Utah’s close win last year against the Wolfpack featured a couple of key performances by players on this year’s squad, such as senior Karine Bourdages and junior Erin Monson.

The men’s tennis team (5-4) heads to Idaho for matches against No. 29 Boise State (6-4) and Idaho (7-3).

The men’s team is looking to move past the bad weekend in Southern California last week as the Utes fell to both University of California Santa Barbara and UC Irvine.

The Utes swept the Vandals 7-0 the last time they met. They are on a current three-match losing streak to the Broncos, with Utah’s last victory in Boise coming in 2006.

“After last week’s losses on the road, we are looking to get some wins and get back on the winning track,” said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu in a statement. “Both Idaho and Boise State are respectable programs and both should give us a pretty good run for our money.”
